What a sleep-focused psychiatric evaluation may involve
Dr. Yang reviews the pattern and timing of sleep, daytime effects, mood and anxiety symptoms, routines, substances, medical history, current medications, prior treatment, and your goals.
The evaluation distinguishes psychiatric contributors from concerns that may require a primary-care clinician or sleep specialist. A sleep laboratory or sleep study is not provided by this practice.
How sleep-related concerns may be approached
Care may include behavioral strategies, review of medications that affect sleep, treatment of an underlying psychiatric condition, or a medication option when appropriate.
Recommendations consider daytime functioning, safety, prior treatment response, preferences, and what is sustainable in daily life. Sleep is considered alongside mood, anxiety, stress, medication effects, and routines, and the plan can be adjusted over time.
When another medical evaluation may be helpful
Symptoms suggesting sleep apnea, abnormal movements during sleep, neurological concerns, or another medical sleep disorder may need evaluation through primary care or sleep medicine. Urgent safety concerns require emergency care.
Common questions about sleep care
Can a psychiatrist help with insomnia?
Yes, when insomnia is connected with mood, anxiety, stress, psychiatric medication, or another mental-health concern. The evaluation also considers when a medical sleep assessment would be more appropriate.
Does this practice provide sleep studies?
No. This practice provides psychiatric evaluation and treatment, not sleep-laboratory or sleep-study services. Dr. Yang will discuss another setting when specialized medical testing appears useful.
Helpful before scheduling
You don’t have to figure out the next step alone.
If poor sleep is affecting your days, an evaluation can help clarify why.
