Psychosis and schizophrenia

Psychosis and schizophrenia can affect perception, beliefs, thinking, motivation, and daily functioning.

Most appointments are provided by secure video for patients located in California.

Reasons people seek help

  • Changes in perception or strongly held beliefs that cause concern
  • Thoughts or speech that feel harder to organize
  • Reduced motivation or emotional expression
  • A decline in work, school, relationships, or self-care
  • Questions about a prior psychosis-related diagnosis
  • Ongoing outpatient follow-up after symptoms have become more stable

What a psychosis evaluation may involve

Dr. Yang reviews current concerns, previous episodes, medical and psychiatric history, medications and side effects, substance use, sleep, functioning, safety, prior treatment, and your goals.

With your permission, information from a family member or clinician can sometimes clarify changes over time. If prior records are incomplete or several possible causes need to be distinguished, diagnosis and treatment planning may take more than one visit.

Ongoing appointments review symptoms, functioning, medication response and side effects, communication, available support, and whether outpatient video care remains safe and appropriate.

How outpatient psychosis care may be approached

Care may include medication management, psychotherapy when appropriate, and planning around daily functioning and follow-up. Dr. Yang explains benefits, limitations, side effects, and alternatives before decisions are made.

Follow-up may focus on early symptom changes, stress or routine disruptions, daily functioning, and communication with trusted supports when authorized. The appropriate level of care is reassessed as symptoms, safety, monitoring needs, or available support change.

When a different level of care may be needed

Severe confusion, rapidly worsening symptoms, inability to meet basic needs, urgent safety concerns, or insufficient support may require emergency evaluation, hospitalization, or another level of care. The appropriateness of video outpatient care is reassessed as symptoms, monitoring needs, and available support change.

Common questions about psychosis treatment

Can psychosis or schizophrenia care be provided through telehealth?

For some stable outpatient situations, ongoing psychiatric care may be provided through secure video. The fit depends on current symptoms, safety, functioning, support, and the amount of in-person monitoring needed.

Can a family member join an appointment?

With your permission, a family member or trusted support person may sometimes join part of a visit or share relevant observations. Your privacy and preferences remain central.

Helpful before scheduling

You don’t have to figure out the next step alone.

If unusual perceptions or thoughts are becoming harder to manage, an evaluation can help.
